Airtec recently had the privilege of attending the Driving the Dream Conference, hosted by Transport Women Australia Limited (TWAL). Over three days, the event delivered an outstanding program of speakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, each designed to inspire, connect, and drive meaningful change across the transport industry.
The conference featured a lineup of truly inspiring speakers, including Alana Kilmartin, Amy Lezala, Casuarina “CJ” Smith, Lena Coates, and the incredibly impactful Heather Jones.
A standout moment was seeing Heather Jones recognised with the Trish Pickering Award at the Award Dinner, sponsored by Paccar Australia and Cummins. After hearing her story of strength, resilience, and perseverance, it was clear this honour was well deserved.
The conference kicked off on Thursday evening with a warm and welcoming networking event for first-time attendees. Designed to break the ice, the session created an inclusive and relaxed environment, making it easy for attendees to connect and build new relationships from the outset.
Friday began powerfully with Heather Jones opening the day. Her story was raw, emotional, and deeply personal, sharing the challenges she has faced, the milestones she has achieved, and the lessons learned along the way. Her journey is a testament to resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the industry.
TWAL’s ongoing commitment to supporting women in transport was further highlighted through the Driving the Difference Scholarship, developed in partnership with Daimler Trucks Australia Pacific in 2019. This initiative continues to open doors for women across transport and logistics.
Airtec extends its congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients: Chloe Hunt, Mandy Solar, Brittany Grech, Chelsea Moen, and Jennifer Vella. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these opportunities will have on your careers and the industry.
Mental health and wellbeing were also a key focus, with Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds announcing a new partnership with SuperFriend. Together, they will deliver a tailored version of the Thriving Workplace Index, helping to better understand psychosocial risks and protective factors across the transport, warehousing, and logistics sectors.
Lena Coates delivered valuable insights on leadership and confidence, drawing from her work as an executive coach and author of Cracking the Confidence Code. Her session focused on overcoming self-doubt, building authentic confidence, and taking ownership of career progression.
Another impactful session explored the Volvo Iron Women Program, presented by Heather Saunders, Victoria Conlan, and Joanne Bathols. This initiative, delivered in collaboration with Volvo Group, WomenCAN, Wodonga TAFE, and TWAL, continues to support women entering sustainable, meaningful careers in the industry.
Friday concluded with TWAL’s lively Country Sheikh-themed networking evening, providing a fun and engaging way to unwind, connect, and celebrate the day’s learnings.
Saturday maintained the momentum, featuring a panel of influential leaders including Alina Hawkins, Ann Lopez, and Bianca D'Rosario. Their discussion explored leadership journeys, advocacy, and the evolving role of women shaping the future of transport.
CJ Smith shared a deeply personal and previously untold perspective on her career journey, highlighting the realities of the industry, her transition into a new path, and how she has built a platform to inspire others to consider a career in transport.
Amy Lezala provided an honest and insightful presentation on navigating career progression alongside motherhood, emphasising the importance of boundaries, resilience, and balance in achieving long-term success.
Alana Kilmartin closed the conference with exceptional energy. Following her 2025 national roadshow (visiting over 250 high schools) she has become a leading voice in youth career development. Her keynote translated these experiences into practical strategies for businesses looking to engage and attract the next generation into the workforce.
Saturday evening’s Paccar Australia and Cummins Award Night celebrated excellence across the industry. Congratulations to Rachael Heufel, recipient of the 2026 Young Gunnette Award, recognising young women making a significant impact in transport.
Rachael, a Breakdown Technician with Daimler Trucks Canberra, has quickly become a highly valued and respected member of the team. Her professionalism, dedication, and pride in her work are evident, making her a deserving recipient of this recognition.
Airtec also congratulates fellow nominees Louise Azzopardi, Simrat Cheema, and Millie Fuller for their outstanding contributions.
Overall, the conference and award events were both uplifting and impactful. TWAL continues to create opportunities that strengthen the industry, foster connection, and support the next generation of transport professionals.
For anyone considering attending a future TWAL event, we strongly encourage you to do so. We look forward to seeing you at the 2028 conference in Queensland.
